In light of the tragic event that occurred on February 14 during which 17 lives were lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in what is now considered one of the deadliest school massacres in the nation’s history, leaders representing Miami-Dade County are seeking support from the state of Florida and are requesting an extra $30 million this year to further reinforce school campus security infrastructure and improve mechanisms for the prevention of future tragedies.   

The Homestead Mayor’s Youth Council’s 2018 Homestead Youth Achiever Scholarship application is now open.  Thanks to community fundraising efforts spearheaded by the Youth Council and Homestead Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough, a limited number of $500 scholarships will be awarded to qualified high school seniors.  Applications are due April 1, 2018.

You may think an outdoor classroom is just another playground; however, an outdoor classroom carries a deeper concept: it opens the door to experiencing the beauty of our surroundings through the curiosity of learning. An outdoor classroom can be defined as “a space that brings learning outside.” It becomes a gathering place for teachers and students to integrate nature into school programs.
